Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren was a professional boxing match between YouTuber Jake Paul and former MMA fighter Ben Askren. The fight took place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 17, 2021. Paul won the fight when he knocked out his opponent at 1:59 of the first round. There were 500,000 PPV buys of the fight.
Information on the fight
Many combat sports experts and athletes disliked the fight because the retired MMA fighter Askren was known for his grappling skills and was thought to be one of the sport’s worst strikers.
Askren, who was 36 at the time and had retired from MMA, had also had a hip replacement in the months before signing the contract for the fight.
Paul was younger and taller than Askren, but Askren was a better athlete. Paul used his jab to keep Askren on the outside. Brent Brookhouse of CBS said that early on in the fight, Askren “looked stiff and robotic.” Halfway through the first round, Paul hit Askren with an overhand right. Askren fell to the ground straight-legged. Even though Askren got to his feet right away, the fight was called off because Askren wasn’t very steady. Askren said after the fight that the fight was stopped too soon, but other than that, he seemed happy with how it went.
About 1.5 million pay-per-view purchases were made for the fight, which cost $49.99.
